The family gained its surname from the 1655 marriage of George Melville, Fourth Lord Melville and First Earl of Melville to Catherine Leslie a descendant of Alexander Leslie, first Earl of Leven.

Bartholomew was granted lands at Leslie in the district of the Garioch, near Aberdeen, originally known as the lands of Lesslyn. Leslie Castle, in the Parish of Leslie, Garioch, Aberdeenshire was the original site of the "new" Clan it was a raised mound surrounded by a stockade.

In 1457, George Leslie was created Earl of Rothes.
