He goes to Jane's apartment; it is actually in the process of being rented out. Paying through equally abusive Dexter only incurs more demands and abuse, until Chaz brings along ex con office mail boy Winston Boyko, who promises to scare away, but is shot by LaRoche, leaving Chaz to deal with the corpse, police detective Church being a friend of Winston's. An armed man—later identified as Philippe LaRoche—bursts into the hotel room, beats Charles, and brutally rapes Lucinda. Charles embezzles $10,000 from his company and he and Winston plot to get the drop on LaRoche at his specified meeting location. Granted, prior to this he asks his boss for a check for the commercial expense, so it might have made more sense to ask for a transfer earlier because a check implies that he did not signing for funds and could not have embezzled the funds.
Charles disposes of Winston's body and gives a false alibi when he is questioned about the murder by police detective Franklin Church, who also happens to be Winston's close relative. On a commuter train, Charles strikes up a conversation with Lucinda Harris (Jennifer Aniston), an alluring woman who is a married financial adviser. Charles is married, has a worn out marriage with his wife Deanna Schine and they have been saving money for years for their diabetic daughter that needs a transplantation of kidney associated to a new expensive experimental drug.
He rents a room in the same seedy hotel as before and waits for Jane to ensnare her target and bring Sam to a hotel room. This was also the first film to be released by The Weinstein Company in the United States. A couple of days later, Charles is blackmailed, but Lucinda is reluctant of going to the police since she does not want to lose the custody of her daughter. I assumed that that Charles Shine did not have time to return the money to the work account before his boss discovers it is gone because the banks would have been closed when he was at the hotel and retrieved the briefcase with the $100,000. A month later, LaRoche calls again, this time demanding $100,000.

Chicago advertising executive Charles 'Chaz' Schine is mentally worn down by his useless teacher wife Deanna and their equally ingrate daughter Amy, whose bad diabetes requires experimental, uncovered treatment that would exhaust their life savings. When Laroche menaces Charles' family, the executive tries to solve the problem and the situation gets completely out of control.
