google photos only backs up when app is open
I am also experiencing this since Google Photos was released. If you have Back up & sync on, deleting the Google Photos app from your device will not turn it off.

Since then I haven’t been able to back up photos automatically without opening google photos. I uploaded all my 7000+ pictures in two days.
Mine doesn't either, it seems. Don't use iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos simultaneously unless you do a lot more research and accept the risk of loss.

I've known a couple people with this same issue and it was because they forgot they disabled background refresh for everything. You will lose what you have written so far. Tap "Back up & sync" on or off.
If that is normal behaviour on iOS how come OneDrive backs up pictures automatically? Thank you.

I was under the impression that google photos backs up pictures automatically without a manual assistance with all options turned on. It only backs up when the app is on foreground. Now, I must open google photo iOS app to start the process.
If I don’t open google photos app my photos will not sync. It's a limitation of iOS. But is it actually a limitation with iOS? You will lose what you have written so far.

Only the Apple apps can actually run in the background.

Before I would take a picture and it would upload to google photos and sync across my laptop and desktop. Are you sure you want to continue? Does it mean that before 2017 sync would occur automatically (so that was also normal behaviour at that time) ?
I swear when photos was ingrained in the Google+ app, background uploads would infact upload.
