Since few days after the freeze header implementation.

To work around this issue, reduce the image to less than 50 megapixels, or use the new SharePoint Online Document Library view.

The picture list had tile view set by default without manual steps and after header freeze update for MSFT, the default got switched to list view.

I am aware of selecting thumbnail view. Thumbnail(upper left corner)>open the Drop-menu>select this.
