A strong thesis statement will include all three points that clearly tell the reader what to expect in the essay whereas an incomplete or weak thesis statement may confuse readers. You have no doubt been drilled on the need for a thesis statement and its proper location at the end of the introduction. Beyond the sexist language of the time, it displays condescension toward “fact-collectors” which reflects a general modernist tendency to elevate the abstract and denigrate the concrete. The how/why: This level specifies the way in which the basic argument, (Level 1) is true, often by providing an answer to a “why?” and/or a “how” question.
