To keep things straight in my head and answer questions without getting all technical, boring people. It is weird to say that Jujutsu or Judo is Japanese wrestling, for some ears that sounds odd. Yeah, I was thinking OODA loop when I wrote that post Michael. Aikido is predominatly a "stand up" martial art. When one sits and contemplates about the similarities of Aikido and BJJ, often you will find that BJJ is Aikido on the ground. This kind of grappling is not present to anywhere near the same extent as Judo or BJJ etc. Are you asking a question or trying to prove a point, trying persuade someone, is there a greater purpose to discuss this, it is lost on me? We don't see it in grappling venues, Aikido isn't a duck out of water.
Great Kevin, you have your opinion on Aikido and I have mine, agian I say Aikido and grappling are two different arts, and this comes from a professional Law enforcement Officer and Aikido Instructor.

Exploring this idea further, I use the word "struggle" because the dictionary defines the word grapple as a verb to: e. Seems to me you just want to distinguish Aikido from "sports" like Wrestling and BJJ. Some scientists say it is a fruit, where others say it is a vegetable and both views have evidence to support it. That is based on both scientific results and how a tomato is used either how it is marketed or those at the table. Aikido like Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling heavy martial arts that places a heavy emphasis on safetly subduing your attacker. To make things more convoluted trends complicate the issue even more, one point in time enough people say a tomato is a fruit, and that over shadows those who term it vegetable. What exactly do you folks mean when you talk about grappling? You are trying to equivocate terms here. In BJJ you spend alot of time learning positional hierarchy and dominance...this is important. To what end does it serve to define a tomato as a fruit or a vegetable upon the dinning table, it gets eaten either way. According to the founder's philosophy, the primary goal in the practice of aikido is to overcome oneself instead of cultivating violence or aggre… No the only issue you are running into here is. Or any other venue outside of its own that it created, nothing wrong with that. However it's rare the disparity is soooo large that it doesn't factor into it all. I'm more intrigued with the application of arts that are similar.
Aiki to me is unbalancing your opponent and redirect his/her own inertia, giving a person the ability to throw the opponent if possible. The arm locks, wrist locks, motions of the body on the ground, just seem to be too familiar with Aikido. The application of the term "grappling" to refer specifically to ground fighting is an advent of MMA, basically it seems as a generalisation to differentiate it from kickboxing (we also have grappling! There is a hybrid Aikido that does competitions. Sorry , this video is impractical in showing kote gaeshi as a defence against a pin.. Why would anyone pinned on their back face up try a kote gaeshi movement when there are openings for various arm locks?Any seasoned grappler /judoka would avoid the kote gaeshi attempt.Similarly the average judoka would not apply kote gaeshi.May I also state that in general Judoka do not use kote gaeshi in ne waza. I guess the question becomes, can a Judoka, Jujutsuka use Aiki principles in there Judo/Jujutsu?
What is the importance here of terming Aikido as grappling? Good stuff. Is anyone familiar with Jiai Aikido located in San Diego, CA? We learn them at BJJ as well, but someone who is well versed in aikido is usually more acquainted with them and could catch one of us off guard a lot more easily during rolling. Then sometime later it reverses and more people decide it is a vegetable, than it reverses again.

I get the sense that it's considered to be very different from the technical aspect of Aikido. Another great clip from Roy Dean using Aiki principles. When we say Japanese wrestling we think Sumo, as it more closely fits with picture of wrestling.
Grappling by definition is wrestling, they are inter-changable words.
Good question! I think this is what Roy Dean has been trying to demonstrate in his approach to martials arts in general. Wrestling styles (BJJ included) are all good examples of defining grappling.
